The Revenant Review

The Revenant was clearly one of the best movies of 2015. With its wide release this past weekend more people got to see it and enjoy the movie. Yet it was still an enjoyable movie with issues.

The Revenant should be nominated for plenty of Oscars. The movie itself it is filled with stunning visuals that are all the more impressive due to the fact that was shot all in natural light. The way the movie is shot is no less than a textbook way of shooting a technically precise movie. The director has once again shown why he is at the top of his craft. After winning best picture for Birdman last year he has again pushed his personal talents to the threshold and brought out the best in those around him.

Hardy and DiCaprio both give tremendous performances and will also be in the running for Oscar nominations. The acting gave you the depth realism and emotions that you would expect from these great actors. There is also the bear scene which is absolutely intense and amazing. You truly believe that both characters think there are always doing the right thing. And you do see growth in the form of rage, anger, sadness and eventually forgiveness in character development.

The biggest issue with the film is the length and the pacing, it seems as if they could have cut out a good 10 to 15 minutes of the movie. On the other hand there is more than enough reason for the movie to have the run time that it does. The issues with the length of the Revenant is based on the fact the movie does seem to drag. This will be overlooked by the fact that they did things that are normally not done in movies today. The fact that the story was based on true events also cause some of the drag time, and there is nothing that the director could do about that.

It is difficult to judge this movie on the few flaws that it does have but they seem glaring at certain points in time. The story itself is told masterfully the acting is brought to a apex and the director did exactly what he is known for bringing the best out of everyone.

When you look at all the items in a whole this movie will stand out among the movies of 2015. When you look back 10 to 15 years from now this will be a movie that people watch once maybe twice but I don’t believe it will be watched over and over again. However that does not take away from the great acting and the great directing that the reverent displays and every minute of the film. When all is said and done the Revenant is a solid 5 out of 5

5 out of 5 (93 points out of 100)
